Frequently Asked Questions

What is acute kidney injury (AKI)? +

It’s sudden or gradual, and often reversible loss of kidney function. It’s a serious condition requiring immediate medical attention and treatment. With timely diagnosis, effective treatment, and proper management, many patients can recover normal kidney function. Raising awareness about AKI, its causes, symptoms, and preventive strategies is essential for improving outcomes and reducing the global burden of kidney-related diseases. Learn more

What is chronic kidney disease (CKD)? +

This describes kidney damage, regardless of the cause, that has been present for at least three months. CKD sometimes leads to end stage kidney disease (ESRD) requiring dialysis or kidney transplant to stay alive. Learn more

What is end stage kidney disease (ESRD)? +

This is permanent kidney failure. The kidneys cannot get rid of fluid or excess waste from the body. You therefore require kidney transplant or dialysis to stay alive. Learn more

What types of kidney conditions do you treat? +

We provide care for acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), end-stage renal disease, and offer hemodialysis services. Our nephrology specialists also provide consultation and ongoing kidney health management.

What is the cure for CKD and ESRD? +

There’s no cure for CKD or ESRD however, there are ways we could help people with these diseases live a full productive life. It’s therefore essential for you to have regular checkups with your team. With this, you may be able to slow the progression of your disease. Learn more

What is dialysis? +

This is the artificial method used to remove waste from your blood. This is the only treatment for patients with ESRD in the absence of a kidney transplant. Dialysis accomplishes some of the functions of a normal kidney for example removing waste products, excess salt and water from the body as well as helping to control your blood pressure.

What are the different kinds of dialysis treatments? +

The 2 types of dialysis are hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Depending on your health, lifestyle or other medical factors, you and your doctor could elect what type of dialysis is right for you based on advantages, requirements and scheduling options.

  • Hemodialysis: This is the process where blood is filtered outside the body by a machine and then returned to your body. Learn more about our hemodialysis team/unit
  • Peritoneal dialysis: The lining of the inside of your abdomen is called the peritoneum. This natural lining can be used to filter your blood, hence the name peritoneal dialysis.
What can I eat if I have CKD and ESRD? +

This will depend on the stage of CKD. Please follow up with your team to make this determination. However:

  • Limit the amount of salt – this can raise your blood pressure and counteract your kidneys
  • Watch out for too much phosphorus and potassium. With CKD and ESRD, these minerals can build up in your body and potentially create heart problems
  • Watch the amounts of protein you’re taking in collaboration with your physician
